Experience hiking through sea caves, mountains and volcanoes to a wave-sculptured
coastline complete with blow holes. Amidst "agave" and "manzanita",
the coast of Baja is and probably will remain to be a truly unspoiled paradise,
for many years to come.
Enjoy rock climbing on the rocks of the famous Lover's beach or perhaps biking
through the desert. One of the most beautiful hiking spots in Baja is the desert
of Los Cabos. You will find numerous trip packages offered which include beverages,
guides, equipment and meals. You need only bring the camera, for the beauty
is spectacular!
HIKING

Los Cabos offers a temperate climate and diverse terrain ideal for hiking, mountain
biking, and a variety of other outdoor activities. Local tour companies are
available to provide equipment rentals and guided excursions. This area of Baja
offers a unique combination of landscapes to the outdoor adventurer. Hike into
the Sierra de la Laguna Biosphere reserve and experience the magic of cascading
waterfalls in the spectacular cactus forests of this seldom visited desert wilderness.
Bike to the hot springs above Santiago or along the unpaved seaside road of
the East Cape. Or enjoy other outdoor activities including horseback riding,
ATV-ing, kayaking, para sailing, bird-watching, jet skiing and sailing.

Sierra de Laguna is one of the most popular hiking spots for residents of the
Cape area. There are numerous hiking trails and quite varied terrain depending
on where you begin. Approaching from the west side is more direct, although
a bit steeper than from Rancho San Dionisio. This hike from the west side can
be completed round-trip in two days. The vegetation changes quickly along the
way, from desert to forest, and the views of the sierra and of the Pacific Ocean
are absolutely magnificent. The eastern trails into the sierra are more difficult
to navigate, using a local guide is a must.

July through October rains have caused many floods which have been known to wash
out hiking trails. The best backpacking season is late fall, after the rainy season,
when the streams are full. The warmest temperatures are usually in May and June
but in the sierra may only reach around 80 degrees, unlike the high temperatures
of the coastal plains and desert at that time of year.

Make sure to have good footwear and plenty of water when hiking in Baja Sur
area, as you may encounter a rocky terrain in some places. Since the climate
is dry, you will probably need at least 2 liters of water per person for the
day, depending on how hot the temperatures climb. The temperature cools down
quite a bit at night, so make sure to have enough layers of clothing to be comfortable.
You must be especially careful when hiking in Baja's desert lands. You will
need twice as much water since it is so hot and dry. Good sun protection is
also essential.
