The History of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Cabo San Lucas first saw modern development when Southern California millionaires built their vacation homes along the cliffs that towered above magnificent, clear bays and coves. Luxury resorts followed in the 1960’s. However, until the early 1970’s the beauty secrets of Baja Sur were known only to the heartiest travelers. The Sea of Cortés, due to its relative isolation, is one of the world’s unique ocean environments. It is considered to be the biologically richest body of water on earth, supporting over 800 marine species as it stretches 1,125 km north to south; the Sea of Cortés was actually formed millions of years ago when the Baja Peninsula slid westward along the San Andreas Fault.
The Los Cabos area encompasses the cities of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo to the north and the tourist corridor located between the two cities. While San Jose del Cabo remains a tranquil, small village atmosphere, Cabo San Lucas offers a vibrant nightlife at its numerous cafés and nightclubs as well as outstanding cuisine of all styles and for all tastes. In the past five years, a considerable amount of development has occurred, giving Cabo a dramatic facelift that attracts even the most discriminating traveler. Puerto Paraiso, a new multi-million dollar shopping plaza has recently opened in downtown Cabo San Lucas and the new Puerto Los Cabos Marina is slated to open in the spring of 2005 providing first-class reception and full- service facilities to private yachts of all sizes, and dockage to accommodate over 500 boats.
