Summertime Activities in Cabo San Lucas

There is much more to Cabo than just margaritas, fishing and golf! There is a rugged, natural and well-preserved beauty hidden just beyond the resorts and beaches. There are lush woodlands of oak and pine in the Sierra de Laguna hills, and miles of pristine desert and white-sand beaches in the valleys below. There are beautiful, cascading waterfalls, fauna-filled estuaries, and a dramatic series of rock formations on the Peninsula's southernmost point where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. And in the waters offshore congregate some of the most fascinating sea life on the planet. Eco-tours come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from senior citizen friendly to X-Game professional tours, from individual thrill seekers to families looking for a cultural and safe outdoor adventure:

Hiking
While many travelers picture themselves walking along a beach at sunset while on vacation, others know that a different but just as spectacular experience awaits amidst Los Cabos' starkly beautiful desert landscape. In addition to incredible rock formations, sprawling vistas and hardy desert vegetation, hikers will see lizards, jack rabbits and rattlesnakes (tall leather boots are a must). Favorite areas are in the nearby La Laguna Mountains and fossil fields of the Cape region. A highly recommended hike is to the waterfalls (or "cascadas") at Santiago where non-expert hikers should only travel with an experienced, professional guide.

MountainBiking
The dramatic terrain of Los Cabos is ideal for mountain bike riding. Several bicycle clubs and many hotels rent bikes by the day or hour. One popular off-road trip is to beautiful Punta Gorda, eight miles away. Or a combination ride and hike to the hot springs above the little town of Santiago is a great option.

Bird Watching
Birders will find paradise here amidst palm trees and lush vegetation in the only recognized bird sanctuary in San Jose del Cabo on the Baja peninsula. Visitors can check out over 150 species of aviary life including colorful macaws, large brown pelicans and the ever-present frigate bird with its distinctive ruby-red throat.

Horseback Riding
Horseback riding for all levels of rider is available in Los Cabos on some of the most spectacular terrain in the world. Riders can explore secluded beaches at sunset, trot slowly through the desert like modern-day cowboys or follow specially marked riding trails.

Aqua Adventures
The tranquil, azure waters of the Sea of Cortez off Los Cabos are rich in coral formations and other sea life. While these waters are the winter home of the California Gray Whale and famous for whale watching during January through March, snorkeling and scuba diving in these clear, clean waters is considered some of the world’s best year round.
Paddle crystal blue waters and watch for dolphins, manta rays, then snorkel on the only living coral reef in Baja, described by Jacques Cousteau as "the aquarium of the world."

Professionally guided tours of all types are available year round. Breathtaking waterfalls, relaxing hot springs or how about an ATV eco-tourism ride on state-of-the-art vehicles through mountains, river beds and desert dunes.
