Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - Fishing.
Click below for Cabo San Lucas fishing, boating and yacht charters.
The dream of fighting a big fish haunts all fishermen. An exhausting fight
lasting for hours, the thrill of experiencing the power that suddenly surges
from the ocean depth and tantalizes you with excitement - these are some of
the ingredients that make the fishing in Cabo San Lucas a memorable experience
for sea anglers of all ages and levels. Renown for the abundance of big-game
fish and year around superb fishing, Cabo San Lucas & Los Cabos fishing charters
boast a number of international fishing records. Due to the fact that there
are more striped marlin caught within a radius of twenty miles of Cabo San Lucas
all year round, this area is known as the marlin capitol of the world. Dorado
(mahi-mahi), wahoo and yellowfin tuna are plentiful and don't be surprised if
you have one jump right into your boat! Catch and release is the name of the
game for marlin fishing and other troy fish. Mahi-mahi and tuna can be kept.
The late Jacques-Yves Cousteau visited over twenty times and named the Sea of
Cortés the "world's aquarium". Officially known as the Gulf of California, this
sea supports more marine life than any other body of water on earth. The Sea
of Cortés is Earth's newest sea though it was formed five million years ago
when Baja California separated from the Mexican mainland along the San Andreas
fault. It is now home to over 800 species of marine vertebrates and 2,000 invertebrates.
A fishing trip to an exotic destination such as Cabo San Lucas requires planning, preparation and research. Our charters consist of two kinds of fishing boats: the pangas which are very big row boats with outboard motors providing few amenities or you might consider a cruiser which is a modern fiberglass boat providing shelter from the sun and includes bathroom facilities, staff, meals and electronic fish finding gear. Luckily, getting the most of that investment and making sure the fishing adventure goes smoothly is often just a matter of asking the right people the right questions. At Cabo San Lucas Villas we have done all of the planning and research, and are prepared to address any of the questions that may arise prior or after your fishing trip. Providing good service during our fishing trips is critical. The ability to catch fish is one thing, but it is not something that can be controlled. What can be controlled is the quality of the fishing equipment and the conditions on the boat. We realize that most of our clients appreciate a well-rigged boat and the professionalism of our fishing crews.
Whether your preferred method of fishing is trolling, casting, or drifting,
whether you prefer fishing with artificial, live or cut baits, whether you are
after marlin, mahi-mahi, or yellowfin, the knowledgeable crews of Cabo San Lucas
fishing charters make your fishing experience a memorable one. There are charters
for half day outings, full day or multi day fishing excursions with on-board
living accommodations. Please contact us at Cabo San Lucas Villas and we'll
help you to arrange an enjoyable fishing outing on your next visit to Cabo San
Lucas or Los Cabos. Our fleet of sport fishing or leisure charters on boats
or yachts range from 31' on up to 120'.
Pisces Fish Report
May 28th through June 3rd, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 75%
BILLFISH: Catches are beginning to creep up as water temperatures begin to climb and striped marlin were again our top catch this week. However it was a bit hit and miss as to where the marlin were located on any given day. The better days were towards the end of the week when stripers began to bite close to shore between a mile and a mile and a half off of the arch and Solmar beach, which is very close indeed. On June 3rd, Cale and Jennifer Staton from Mesquite, Texas fishing aboard “Adriana” and were very pleased to catch two striped marlin. This same day Jimmy Spring, another Texan from Big Springs let two go aboard “La Brisa”, in the same location; one took a purple lure and the other a live caballito. On June 2nd, “Tracy Ann” fished the other direction, but not too far into the Sea of Cortez, at Cabeza de Ballena and released two striped marlin both on live bait, just two miles offshore for Kirk Wallace & Glenn Stoponaitis, from Abilene and Dallas, where else....Texas of course, I tell you people from that state are lucky fishermen. Not to be left out Julie Steward from Atlanta, fishing with Stephanie McCarrey, representing lady anglers, also released two striped marlin two miles out from Santa Maria aboard “La Brisa”. We did have some boats “skunked” at the beginning of the week, but conditions improved on a daily basis. Fifty percent of charters caught marlin, giving us a total of sixteen this week with all but three released. Those brought in weighed an average of 130 lbs.
OTHER SPECIES: Catches of dorado were fair this week with some nice ones caught, such as a 32 lb’er by Guillermo Blanco from Hurst, Texas, who also released two striped marlin aboard “Tracy Ann”. Inshore, red snapper catches were good up to 20 lbs. We also had a couple of hammerhead sharks released up to 50 lbs . Skipjacks and roosterfish were also caught in lesser amounts.
LOCATION: Close to shore, from Solmar to Chileno 1 to 3 miles, 11.50 spot.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, seas calm on the Cortez still choppy several days on the Pacific, fog banks offshore.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 65-73 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito, purple, green.

San Jose del Cabo
June 6, 2009
Anglers –
Southern Baja is welcoming light crowds of tourists, great to time to
visit, weather prefect, not too warm yet, sunny days in the mid 80s.
Oceans have been calmer in the direction of San Jose del Cabo and
water temperatures are now close to 80 degrees is this region, though
the Pacific is much cooler than this. Warmest currents are definitely
being found in the direction of the Sea of Cortez.
Anglers found supplies of live mullet, caballito and limited sardinas
available. Schools of bolito and smaller skipjack are becoming more
prevalent on the fishing grounds. Offshore fishing action has been
dominated by striped marlin, most often being found 6 to 20 miles from
shore, striking on lures and live bait, but often times not eager to
bite. Some dorado are being encountered scattered through the area,
hitting various lures and baits, though not in big numbers, there has
been chance at catching a 40 pound plus bull. We expect with more
baitfish appearing on the banks that more dorado and other gamefish
will be following. Only a few tuna being reported, on some days there
are reports of fish seen feeding on the banks, but more often they are
not striking, just an occasional tuna in the 10 to 30 pound class
being accounted for, these fish were taken on either dead or live
sardinas, no consistent bite.
Concentrations of mullet are now moving inshore, this has attracted
more roosterfish, jacks and snapper. Slow trolling with mullet in the
shallow rocky areas north of Punta Gorda has been producing great
opportunities of hooking into and trying to actually bring to the boat
a monster sized dogtooth snapper. Anglers using 50 to 80 pound main
line with fluorocarbon leader of 80 to 120 pound have reported
consistent success. Amberjack and grouper have also been mixed in with
the big snapper, fun to see these aggressive fish attack the slow
trolled surface bait and you better be ready to apply as much pressure
as possible in order to keep from being cut off by the rocks.
Palmilla Point has been producing good morning action for sierra,
yellowtail, amberjack, bonito and even a few dorado. Concentrations of
juvenile sized roosterfish are schooling along the beach stretches,
only a few larger roosterfish being reported, this could change at any
time, peak rooster time is now.
There were several wahoo reportedly caught this past weekend in the
area of La Fortuna to Iman, one of them weighed close to 70 pounds and
hit on a small sized Rapala being used to target bonito. Maybe
conditions will become just to the wahoo's liking prefer and go on the
bite. In years past there could be some incredible wahoo action found
on the inshore banks during late spring, early summer season.
The combined panga fleets launching from La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos
sent out approximately 58 charters for the week, with anglers
reporting a fish count of: 4 wahoo,
8 striped marlin, 11 dorado, 4 yellowfin tuna, 215 roosterfish, 23
sierra, 16 yellowtail, 25 amberjack, 44 bonito, 27 dogtooth snapper,
10 cabrilla, 104 various pargo species, 18 hammerhead shark and 15
jack crevalle.

prestigious offshore championship title with 10 marlin releases on the final

The Premier All-Release Circle Hook Marlin Tournament - May 27th
- 31st 2007.
All circle hook! All release! That's the only way to ensure the future of marlin
and billfish fisheries as well as to preserve recreational and tournament fishing
– not only in Cabo San Lucas and the Baja peninsula but worldwide. Everyday,
thousands of marlin, sailfish and other billfish species are killed, most by
commercial fishing boats – longliners that have little if any concern
over the plight of marlin or other “incidental catch". Countless
other marlin and billfish are taken as trophies by uninformed anglers –
a large number of which compete in billfish tournaments that require a weigh-in
to determine the winners. By refocusing attention on the destructive methods
used and how simple changes in techniques can minimize loss we hope to set a
new precedent - Responsible, Conservation-Based Tournaments and a renewed effort
to enforce Responsible Commercial Fishing.
In the spirit of Competition, Sportsmanship and Conservation, the world's top
anglers have united to present one of the richest and most prestigious billfish
tournaments ever held. The World Championship Billfish Release Tournament (WCBRT)
is set for May 27th through May 31st at the beautiful Cabo Villas Beach Resort
in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
