Give us a call here at Cabo San Lucas Villas today.

Gordo Banks Pangas
San Jose del Cabo
January 23, 2010
Anglers –
As the west coast of the United States continues to be hammered by a series of back to back powerful storms the Southern Baja California region has been enjoying warmer than usual mild winter time conditions. There have been scattered clouds and high temperatures are hovering around 80 degrees. Winds have been moderate, ocean conditions have been comfortable for anglers, though the south wind is predicted to gust up to 20 miles per hour the next couple of days. Water temperatures are averaging 75 degrees throughout most of the area, this is several degrees higher than normal for this time of year. Live bait has consisted mainly of caballito, sardinas and sardineta, with mackerel being very scarce.

Billfish action slowed down, below normal for this period, charters targeting striped marlin worked hard to catch one marlin and multiple billfish catches were not common. It was strange that sailfish were still being hooked into on a fairly regular basis. Casting live baits to tailing marlin was the most common method, other boats did hook fish while drifting live baits deeper in the areas where they had seen free jumping stripers.

Not much inshore action now, sierra and roosterfish were scattered and not numerous. Bottom fishing was not producing consistent numbers of fish either, a few yellowtail were starting to show in the reports, so hopefully more of these jacks will migrate into the area and start providing a welcome option for anglers.

Yellowfin tuna were schooling on the Gordo Banks, fish ranged in size from 10 pounds to over 100 pounds. Lots of skipjack and pesky seagulls were making anglers work that much harder to hook into the yellowfin tuna. Most strikes were coming while drift fishing with sardinas or chunk bait from skipjack and sardineta. The pressure also increased on these fishing grounds since this was one of the few areas where there was a good chance at catching tuna.

Dorado were found spread out through most of the zone, being found close to shore, as well as offshore. Striking on a wide range of baits and lures, most of these fish were smaller schooling size fish under 15 pounds, but there were some exceptions of fish over 25 pounds being landed.

This winter has had its share of unusually activity, among them being the availability of nicer sized tuna on the Gordo Banks and the fact that there are still wahoo holding in the area. The few wahoo that have been accounted for recently have preferred striking on bait versus lures. Rigged dead baits have probably accounted for more fish than live baits, with sardinetas being their favorite, more wahoo were hooked mid morning after the surface of the ocean had a chance to warm some than early in the morning when the wahoo were more in a hibernation mode.

The combined panga fleet launching from La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos sent out approximately 58 charters for the past week, with anglers accounting for a fish count of: 7 sailfish, 6 striped marlin, 9 wahoo, 118 dorado, 83 yellowfin tuna, 11 roosterfish, 29 sierra, 13 amberjack, 15 bonito, 10 cabrilla, 7 yellowtail and 16 pargo.

Good Fishing,

Eric

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
Eric Brictson
Owner/Operator
800 4081199
Los Cabos 1421147
ericgordobanks@yahoo.com
www.gordobanks.com

12 Tribes Restaurant

Located next to the Casa Dorada Resort on Medano Beach is the 12 Tribes Restaurant, offering international cuisine from around the world inspired by the Bible's 12 Tribes. Whether you enjoy the thrill and excitement of sport fishing or prefer a casual Sunday cruise, we here at Cabo San Lucas Villas can find you the perfect fishing experience. So make sure you give us a call and let us help you find the perfect Villa and the perfect Vessel for a perfect Winter Vacation Fishing Trip.

Gordo Banks Pangas

San Jose del Cabo

January 17, 2010

Anglers –

Winter conditions are quite pleasant in Southern Baja, sunny skies, high temperatures near 80 degrees and lows of about 50 degrees, all in all very comfortable considering we are in the midst of winter. Water temperatures are ranging from the lower 70s up to 76 degrees, Clarity has fluctuated with the varying currents. Live sardinas continue to be hard to come by and larger baitfish like mackerel, caballito and sardineta have been available most days. Whale watching is now in full swing and will be peaking in the next couple of months.

Fleets have concentrated most of their efforts on surface fishing for billfish, dorado, tuna, wahoo etc…Not much bottom fishing now, for the few that have tried they have reported minimal success, as the water temperatures cool we expect bottom action to improve. The sierra action also slowed way down this past week, the lack of schooling sardinas most likely the reason for this.
Striped marlin continue to highlight the offshore scene, the Old Light House being one of the hot spots, these fish are also spread out in the direction of the Sea of Cortez, striking on various baits, as well as on trolled lures. Most of the marlin are ranging 90 to 130 pounds. A few (70 to 100 lb.) sailfish still around as well, a bit unusual for January.

The yellowfin tuna have been playing hide and seek, early in the week a handful of yellowfin in the 40 to 60 pound class were accounted for off of the Gordo Banks. Other larger tuna were seen breezing the surface, but just were not in the mood to strike, the fish that were landed hit on chunk bait from skipjack or concinero. Breaking news is that one 220 pound yellowfin tuna was caught by a trio of local La Playita pangeros on Thursday, they had been trolling a live skipjack on the Outer Gordo Bank when the cow hit, on 80 pound tackle they were able to tag team the tuna to gaff within one hour.

Dorado were being caught throughout the area, most of the fish were taken on bait, but they were hitting lures as well. The majority of the do dos were in the 5 to 15 pound range, with a few larger fish in the 20 to 30 pound class accounted for. A dead sea lion was encountered drifting offshore of San Jose del Cabo and it attracted a huge school of nicer sized dorado, so anyone that was able to get in on that action had a day to remember. For the most part normal catches per charter for dorado was 2,3,4 or 5 fish.

The water conditions near Cardon and La Fortuna actually improved to start the week, it was very clean and blue, this triggered the wahoo to become more active, perhaps their last hoorah for the season. Anglers reported taking numerous strikes on caballito, sardineta and mackerel, at times they also hit trolled skirted lead heads and Rapalas. This latest group of wahoo were running larger sized, 30 to 50 pounds.

The combined fleet of pangas launching out of La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos sent out approximately 59charters for the week, with anglers reporting a fish count of: 4 sailfish, 16 striped marlin, 4 hammerhead shark, 18 wahoo, 30 yellowfin tuna, 194 dorado, 32 sierra, 8 roosterfish, 7 amberjack, 8 cabrilla, 16 pargo and 18 triggerfish.

Good Fishing, Eric

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

Eric Brictson

Owner/Operator

800 4081199

Los Cabos 1421147

ericgordobanks@yahoo.com

www.gordobanks.com

Villa Casa Grande Gallery

Make sure you stop on over to the Villa Casa Grande Picture Gallery to see more of this breathtaking 6 bedroom Villa in the Pedregal and then give us a call here at Cabo San Lucas Villas to book your next vacation to Cabo San Lucas to let us know you want to stay at Villa Casa Grande.

Villa Casa Grande

One of the most breathtaking experiences about renting a villa in the Pedregal, the great cliff edge that is the tip of Baja California, is that every villa has extraordinary cliff views of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. The exception was on Monday when a cold front swept through the area, bringing as much as two inches of rainfall throughout the day and the high temperature for the day only reached into the lower 60s, which is almost unheard of locally and maybe occurs an average of one day per year. Winds from the north are now more persistent, this has created a cooling trend for water temperatures, as well as pushing in greener currents. Water temperatures at this time are ranging from 73 to 77 degrees. The conditions have limited options for anglers, but despite the not so favorable conditions anglers did report some respectable catches, hopes are that the weather will settle down and we can start the new year of 2010 off with some quality fishing action. Whales like the cooling waters and are now being seen in greater numbers with each passing day.

Obtaining sufficient supplies of live sardinas continue to be problematic, more often than not there were only minimal amounts to go around, not enough to use for chumming, as would be normal when using the sardinas for bait. Mackerel also became scarcer, as seems to be the normal scenario during the full moon phase. Large schools of skipjack moved into the area off of San Jose del Cabo where mackerel normally school and this has scattered the baitfish.

Due to the limited bait supplies anglers are using what bait is available and a combination of trolling lures. Sierra have moved in along coastal stretches in big numbers, hitting most readily on sardinas, but also whiling to strike on smaller sized hoochies and Rapalas. Dorado were still in the area, but not easy to find, some smaller dodos were found close to shore and a handful of dorado up to 25 pounds were encountered further from shore where charters were mainly targeting striped marlin. The best marlin action is now on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas where the concentrations of stripers are, though the billfish are not as numerous in the direction of the Sea of Cortez. Hugo Pino, the famed La Playita Pangero, landed a 400 pound black marlin off of the Gordo Banks while trolling a hard to come by bolito for bait on Monday during rainy weather conditions.

Another highlight of the week was an estimated 300 pound yellowfin tuna that was landed by Nino Rochin on Tuesday, Nino is a long time La Playita pangero and was using a larger sized skipjack for bait, because the preferred smaller sized bolito were hard to find. This likely will be the last of the 300 pound super cow sized tuna to go down on record for the year of 2009, when approximately a dozen yellowfin of over 300 pounds have been accounted for by the local fleets fishing in vicinity of the Gordo Banks. A few other yellowfin up to 150 pounds were also landed off of the Banks this week, but the conditions were the main factor in limiting how many boats even concentrated on this area, the baitfish were also becoming progressively harder to come by, but most baits that were slow trolled did result in strikes by either tuna, marlin, dorado or sharks.

As water temperatures drop and we transition into winter conditions the elusive wahoo are becoming harder to find, though everyday a few of these speedsters are being landed by anglers trolling the areas from Punta Gorda to La Fortuna, the wahoo that were brought in weighed from 15 to 50 pounds, striking on skirted lead heads, rapalas and larger baitfish. Every year is a bit different, last year at this time the weather was warmer and wind was not so much of a factor, the wahoo actually stayed around through the first couple of weeks of February. If this cooling trend continues the chances are that the remaining wahoo will be seeking out warmer southern waters in the coming weeks.

Very little bottom fishing is now going on, too much current to really be able to concentrate on the rock piles. Even though the official start to the winter season is only days away we have been experiencing clear sunny skies with high temperatures close to 80 degrees, early mornings are becoming cooler, dropping into the upper 50s, so remember to bring appropriate clothing. Water temperatures are now averaging 76 to 79 degrees, which is one or two degrees higher than during the same time period last year. The north winds were much stronger this past week, this limited what options anglers had, but fortunately there was very good action found close to shore in protected areas. Live bait situation varied day to day, mackerel are now reportedly being caught off of San Jose del Cabo, sardinas have been more abundant towards the East Cape, though there are encouraging signs of these smaller baiffish rebounding near the Palmilla Point. Commercial pangeros were actually driving vehicles north to Punta Arena in the afternoons in order to net sardinas off the beaches and then keeping them on ice to sell to the charter boats in the morning, these fresh dead baits actually proved to be the best option for the inshore yellowfin tuna bite in recent days.

The weather conditions but a damper on the epic yellowfin tuna bite that happened during previous weeks, though the fish are still there, as a 183 pound tuna was weighed in on Wednesday, it hit a trolled bolito on the Outer Gordo Bank, if the wind settles down enough we expect more anglers will target the big tuna again. In the mean time a great bite for yellowfin in the 10 to 20 pound class has developed close to shore off of Cardon and Punta Gordon, drift fishing with dead or live sardinas was the productive technique for this. Winds were pushing off colored currents from the north into local waters and this seemed to slow down the consistency of the wahoo action, but these fish were still in the area and limited numbers were being accounted for from the same places where the inshore tuna are being found, wahoo were striking on trolled baits such as caballito and mackerel, as well as Rapalas and Yo-Zuris, sizes ranged from 20 to 40 pounds.

Dorado were not near as numerous as the yellowfin tuna, but most charters were catching an average of two or three, weights were mostly in the 5 to 15 pound range. Last year around Christmas time there were nicer sized dorado up to thirty pounds being caught regularly, so we are hoping with the mackerel now showing up locally that this will attract a larger grade of fish.

Striped marlin continue to provide bonus action for anglers targeting inshore species, many more biilfish are now being encountered off of San Jose del Cabo for this time period than last season, mostly striped marlin in the 70 to 110 pound class. We expect with the schools of mackerel now appearing on local grounds this action will only improve.
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-top: 0in; Several fish in the 80 to 120 pound range have been brought in the past several days and there were reports of seeing the yellowfin come into the chum, these fish were hooked on fresh chunk bait from skipjack that were caught on the same Bank.

While patiently waiting for new sources of schooling sardinas to be discovered more anglers are opting to target the elusive wahoo. Also this is time for tournament team training, as the annual local wahoo tournament based out of La Playita is set for Nov. 22. Areas from Punta Gorda to La Fortuna reported the most activity for the wahoo, trolling live caballito and an array of lures accounted for varying results, from zero to one fish, to as many as five wahoo landed. Sizes ranged from 15 pounds to as high as 50 pounds, surely it will take a nice sized log of a wahoo to take jackpot honors of the wahoo event to be held this coming Sunday.

Dorado were mixed, most of the time just being found solo or in small groups, striking equally well on live baits or trolled lures.
